Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently launched the Starlink satellite service in Indonesia, but it was his outfit that truly caught people’s attention.
During his visit, Musk sported a Javanese batik shirt while visiting a local community health sector, as reported by Business Insider. Batik is a traditional Indonesian technique for dyeing cloth.
Musk’s choice of attire was notable since he typically wears suits or black t-shirts during business trips and product launches. This time, he opted to blend in locally, wearing a green batik shirt suited for Bali.
The green shirt was originally gifted to Musk during a virtual participation in Indonesia’s B20 Summit in November 2022. During this event, Indonesian business executive Anindya Bakrie informed Musk that the “batik bomba” shirt originated from a small village in Central Sulawesi.
Musk’s company, SpaceX, has been collaborating with Indonesia to enhance its internet connectivity. According to World Bank data, about 66% of Indonesia’s 280 million population use Starlink internet.
This collaboration has also paved the way for Indonesia to become a key player in international space exploration.
Musk’s fashion choice not only gained attention from the public, but it also showcased his support for Indonesian culture and industries. Batik is considered a national heritage of Indonesia and wearing it is seen as a sign of appreciation and respect for the country’s traditions.
This was not the first time Musk showed his love for batik shirts. In 2019, he tweeted a photo of himself wearing another batik shirt during a visit to Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China. He expressed his admiration for the cultural significance and beauty of batik designs.
